About Rafael Benitez   by Abby Yang

Rafael Benitez is a football manager best known for his stints in charge of Valencia, Liverpool and, most recently, Internazionale. He is a two-time winner of the Union of European Football Associations manager of the year award, and his teams have won the Spanish league, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA World Club Cup, among other titles.
Early Career
Benitez began his career as a footballer with the youth teams of Real Madrid. He was only moderately successful as a player, with the majority of his career played out in Real Madrid's reserve teams before he played for a number of Spanish lower league teams. He began coaching at the age of 26, returning to Real Madrid and taking over as youth team coach. He worked his way through the ranks, eventually coaching the Madrid reserve team, before taking his first management position at Valladolid. He had fleeting success at various clubs before ending up at Tenerife in the Spanish Second Division, taking the team to promotion into the Spanish Primera Liga.
Valencia
After promotion with Tenerife, Benitez secured his first major coaching position as manager of Valencia. At the time, the Spanish league was dominated by the two traditionally biggest clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Benitez successfully broke this domination, winning the league in his first year and again in his third year, with his teams playing a high-tempo, pressing and possession football. Benitez's Valencia also won the UEFA Cup final in 2004 adidas f50, beating Marseille 2-0. However, Benitez resigned after falling out with the club's board over player signings and reinforcements, declaring "I asked for a table and they bought me a lampshade."
Liverpool
Benitez moved to Liverpool FC, where his reputation was built around a crushing defeat his Valencia team had inflicted on the Liverpool side in the UEFA Champions League. He brought in a high-tempo pressing and possession game, making Liverpool a force to be reckoned with in Europe, although domestic success remained elusive. Under his guidance, the team won the 2005 Champions League final, beating AC Milan on penalties after battling back from a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 halftime deficit to draw 3-3. Benitez also won the FA cup and the UEFA Super Cup, as well as reaching the Champions League final again in 2007, this time losing 2-1 to AC Milan. In the 2008-2009 season, Benitez took Liverpool to second place in the league, its best result in many years.
Internazionale
The Liverpool owners failed to back Benitez in the transfer market to strengthen his squad, leading to the sale of vital players and a lack of reinforcements. Picked to win the title by many in 2009-10, the team instead finished seventh after boardroom turmoil ,and Benitez left Liverpool in the summer, after which he became manager of Internazionale in Milan, which had just won the Italian League and the Champions League. The aging team was hit by injuries, though, and despite winning the FIFA Club World Championship, Benitez was sacked midway through the season after challenging the Internazionale president, Massimo Moratti, to invest in rebuilding the team.
