If you have walked into a sporting goods store or opened an athletic source catalog, you may have noticed the varieties of athletic shoes available for purchase is nearly endless. It seems that every sport and every position have specialized shoes. This specialization aims to do more than just boost sales of athletic shoe companies, it also provides improved sports performance and injury prevention. The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine supports the policy of sport-specific shoes.
Football
Similar to soccer and baseball, football players also wear cleats. They come in several varieties, including molded, detachable, grass and turf. Low-, mid- and high-cut models are also available. The cleats are wide and relatively round in shape. The various types of cleats allow for optimal selection for every player and position.
Basketball
Basketball shoes are made specifically to be used on a court. Most are made for indoor courts, while some outdoor shoes are available. Basketball shoes have thick, wide bottoms made of rubber. High-, mid- and low-cut varieties are available. The shoes tend to be quite supportive and durable due to the quick change of direction and jumping motions that are part of the game.
Soccer
Similar to football and baseball, soccer players also wear cleats also known as boots. They come in several varieties, including molded, detachable, indoor and turf.
