If you can imagine placing your feet on plastic plates and then performing exercise movements, you will have an idea of a Gliding workout. Gliding uses small, plastic discs upon which you stand while you work out. The Gliding discs, a brand-name product, are available for use on carpet or wood floors, so this at-home workout tool is adaptable to your environment. To protect your feet and provide stability, shoes are required when using the Gliding discs.
Exercises
According to the Gliding Company, discs can be used for aerobic, strength, core, yoga and Pilates exercises. You can use the discs to simulate skating as you glide back and for across your floor. You can perform lunges for strength training as you slide one foot behind you and then pull it up to meet the other foot. The discs can be placed under your hands as you perform crunches for your abdomen to provide additional resistance as you push the discs across the floor.
Shoes
Since the Gliding discs can be used for various activities, an athletic training shoe will be a good footwear selection. The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine recommends a training shoe because it provides protection for various exercises, including strength training and aerobic exercise. A training shoe has cushioning to protect your joints and will provide foot stability as you maneuver forward, backward and sideways on the discs.
Although bare feet are the norm for both mat work and apparatus training, there may be situations in which you'd prefer to cover your feet. In colder climates, for example, it can be uncomfortable to work out with bare feet during the winter months, especially in a drafty studio. Some practitioners prefer to cover their feet as a matter of personal hygiene.
Selecting Footwear
A training shoe will allow you to participate comfortably in Gliding exercises, however you do have choices to make based on personal considerations. For other exercises such as walking or running, when your feet are pounding into the ground, you will want to choose a shoe with a lot of forefront cushioning. This type of cushioning is not needed during Gliding, as your feet simply slide across the floor.
