Safety Positioning in Football   by Abby Yang

Flooding a zone is an offensive technique in football that is used to overwhelm a defense that is in a zone formation. The goal is to get multiple receivers into a part of the zone that has fewer defenders. For example, sending three receivers out to a part of the zone that only has a cornerback and linebacker creates a mismatch for the defense.
Blitz
During a regulation football game, 11 offensive players line up against 11 defensive players. During a flood, an offense sends a high volume of wide receivers, usually three or more, to one part of the zone. While this can overwhelm defenders, it also leaves gaps in the offensive line and running back position. Since the offense is in a weakened pass protection state, sending your linebackers in to blitz and bringing your safeties down in the zone will allow you a prime chance to sack the quarterback or disrupt the intended play. Varying your blitzes in terms of who is blitzing and where on the field they are blitzing from will also help confuse offensive lines.
Line Checking
Line checking is a technique used by both cornerbacks and linebackers to break up the rhythm of a receiver during a route. If the offense sends out a three-receiver set to flood your zone, bring the cornerbacks and linebackers up to the line, standing directly in front of the receivers. Instead of moving back into the zone, have the cornerbacks and linebackers move toward the receivers after the hike. Have the cornerbacks "bump" the receivers by pushing them backward at the shoulder pads; after an initial push, have the cornerbacks and linebackers run back into position. This aggressive move will throw the receivers off their timing, potentially preventing them from flooding the zone.
Safety Positioning
If you are unable to blitz or line check the offense, your defenders will most likely be mismatched in a particular portion of the field. Instead of moving all players in this direction, instruct your safeties to move toward the flood. While this will not prevent a receiver from getting open, it will minimize the number of yards the receiver will get after the catch. Since a flooded zone usually consists of a short pass, bringing your safeties in will keep the yardage relatively low if a tackle is successfully made Adidas AdiPure IV SL.
Shifting Coverage
If you notice that an offense is moving into a wide receiver set that may attempt to flood the zone, you can instruct your defense to move into man-to-man coverage. Allowing your players to guard the receivers one on one will remove the weaknesses in your defense, allowing each offensive receiver to be accounted for during the game. The only downside to this defensive shift is it leaves the receivers in single coverage. If the offense decides to send a receiver deep, there is a chance a big play could result from this defensive shift.
