
How easy is it to change position in rugby?
Hi, Bit of an odd one this, I have played rugby for the past 11 years, I have played everywhere in forwards apart from hooker and, in my first year of playing I was a high scoring centre. Last summer I picked up a back injury whilst playing prop and havent played since. I have been told by various people that, due to my height of 6'4 i should not play front row anymore and should aim to play back row. I have enlisted the help of a personal trainer and nutritionist and I am aiming to lose 4 stone and be down to a playing weight of 17 stone, If I can lose this weight and gain some pace, could I realisticaly look to move into the backs as a big, crash-ball centre? I feel this would allow me to take the pressure off my back and allow me to reduce my chances of injuries in future. Any help or advice anyone can give would be great.

It very much depends on your team. If you have decent enough centres, you may be more use in the back row. Likewise, if your back row is strong, you may be more use in the centre.
However, even a "crash-ball" centre needs a certain amount of agility and quickness. When going into contact, if your first thought is to lower the shoulder and flatten the tackler, then you should probably play in the back row.
I played prop for 4 years (5'11", 80kg). Not big, as you can see, but strong legs and back from triple jumping. This season I moved onto the wing, as throughout my front-row career, I was on my schools 4x100m relay team, running the 100 in around 11seconds (faster now, but I'm only 16). I scored a bunch of tries on the wing, and was solid in defence, every time I got the ball, my first thought was to flatten the tackler. Although this was very effective, I was still a forward at heart.
So now I'm a 2nd row/flanker!
After my little anecdote, my conclusion is, look at your team's strengths and make your decision!
