Baseball Safety Made Simple   by Arnold Payne

There are many aspects to baseball safety, but a lot of it comes down to fundamentals and staying alert. Depending on the league and the age of the players, it may be necessary to remind everyone to follow the rules and wear the proper gear at all times. It's the responsibility of the manager and coach to keep an eye on all players to ensure safety guidelines are being followed. The following points will clarify what it takes to stay safe when enjoying the great game of baseball.

First, managers and coaches need to be aware of players' pre-existing medical conditions. In most cases, unhealed injuries should not allow a player to continue to play. Similarly, if an injury does occur during a game, it should be immediately checked out. Players aren't often up front about being hurt so coaches need to use their own judgment to decide when medical help is necessary. Most usually a sprained ankle or shoulder injury is only exacerbated by continuing to play.

One danger in baseball that not everyone is aware of are the bases. Injuring a leg or even a foot is easy to do if a player slides hard into a stationary base. If the player is sliding headfirst this can cause head trauma or injury to the arm or hand. One solution to this is using breakaway bases, that are designed to come apart when someone slides into them. Under normal conditions the base will remain in place. If your league is not already implementing this safety feature you should suggest it. Besides that, players need to practice proper sliding techniques and watch for dangerous bases.

Footwear is critical in all sports, baseball included, so it's important for players to wear the right type of shoes.

You can find good quality cleats or baseball shoes that are appropriate, as it's always best to wear shoes made for your sport. This can make a big difference when running the bases or running after a fly ball in the outfield. The ground you're moving on can change quite a bit based on the field and weather, so you need shoes that support your feet adequately. Many accidents, sprains and other injuries can be prevented by wearing high quality athletic shoes. Players who are serious about baseball should get cleats or baseball shoes that are well made and fit well.

As we've discussed here baseball safety is a matter of paying attention to all of the details. Protective gear is important for both play and practice as is an awareness of what's happening at any given moment sometimes players need to be reminded of this. Bats, balls and collisions can be dangerous, but they're not so hard to avoid if players and coaches are alert.
