Practical Advices For Amateur Athletes

Any Olympic athlete will tell you:

That  Physical activiry is an important part of a healthy way of life and normal weight control. Physical activities reduce arterial tensions, keeps your heart in top shape, and reduces stress, it keeps your bones strong, and your body supple, plus it also improves your posture.  Re creative sport is an excellent way to take full advantage of physical activities while having fun.  It could be hockey, golf, aquatic sports, bike racing or skiing. The essential is that you are keeping yourself moving.

One quarter hour of daily activity.

You want to adopt a different and more active way of life. You would like to start at no cost, or at a very low cost.

There is a solution.

Fix yourself an activity that will keep you moving for at least 15 minutes each and every days of the week. That way you will gain the habit of keeping in good shape and will get a lot of satisfaction from it. This is without all the other benefits that you will acquire from that daily activity. You heart will be in top condition, your blood circulation will greatly be improved, you will be more enthusiastic and positive about life in general, and then who knows how far that will carry you in life.

Without consideration to the intensity of your physical activity; follow those simple rules which will prevent injuries, and discouragements.

1. Warm up.

Before jumping into the swimming pool or hitting the first ball, take at least 20 minutes to warm up your muscles. Those warm up exercises should include deep breathing, stretching, and free hand movements, like rolling your arms or touching the tip of your toes with the tip of your fingers. Walking  or slow jogging is also a good way to warm up and untie your muscles and articulations prior to intense training or playing activities.

2. Learn the proper techniques of the game.

It is important to master the proper techniques of the sport you are involved in. If not you will develop bad habits, and bad postures, that may cause injuries to your muscles or articulations, and instead of reaping the benefits you will have sore muscles and hurting articulations and will stop enjoying the sport.  I used to arch my back while doing the clean and jerk weight lifting competitions, instead of staying with a complete straight posture under the bar. I didn’t injure my back, but got into a dead end weight  that If I ever tried to surpass, would definitely had injured my back. My coach told me to improve or stop. I had to stop; for the simple reason that my arms were not supple enough to be able to let me be completely straight under the barbel. I enjoyed that sport enormously. But without the proper techniques it was too dangerous for me to continue. So better find a sport that you love, but also one in which you can master the proper techniques. You will love it even more.

3. Use only good equipments.

To avoid injuries always inspect your equipments, to make sure they are in top shape. We used to do bike jumps when I was a kid. One of my friend loosened  the front nuts of the front wheel. When the bike hit the air the front wheel came off. You know what that did to the family  jewel when I hit the ground. Ouch! And one more Ouch! I was in pain for one month. My friends had a good laugh, but I didn’t found it funny. I now always inspect my bike front wheel every time I go for a bike ride. Sometime we have to learn the hard way. But better be sure than sorry!

4. Avoid over exertion.

Excessive training is one of the main cause of serious injuries among top athletes. Start gradually before pushing yourself to your maximum. Remember that relaxing is as important for your health than training. Take some pauses once in a while to let your body recuperate.

5. Take the time necessary for your body to recuperate.

The period of recuperation after each exercise is as important as the of warm up periods. Take a 20 minute walk in the park, or do slow jogging and stretching before regaining your locker or before returning home.

6. Drink plenty of liquid.

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after each physical activities, even if its a cold temperature outside. When you feel thirsty, it means that your body has already started dehydration which negatively affects your metabolism and lower your energy level.

7. Do some weight lifting exercises.

Weigh lifting exercises assures the optimal function of your vertebral column and of your articulations. They reinforce your muscles which serve as shock absorbers for your articulations and bones and protects your joints from sprains.

8. Take good care of your muscles and articulations.

By developing your muscles and also by stretching you improve your bodily restrictions, and prevent many injuries while training. Like for instance a downhill bumpy skier’s knees muscle are double the size of a regular person. Without those muscles, a skier would sustain major injuries to his knees within a few minutes. Downhill bumpy skiing is extremely demanding on the knee joints, and without strong muscles around the knees it would be absolutely impossible to perform that sport.

9. If you sustain an injury, get it treated as soon as possible.

If after extensive training, you develop muscle pains that last longer than the habitual 3 days apply ice packs on it. If it doesn’t get better, see a doctor as soon as possible.

10. Adopt a champion attitude.

Elite athletes do not always collect medals and do not always win, but they all are champions of a positive attitude toward life and toward their peers. Thy always are trying to improve  their physiques and performances. With a positive attitude, you will also improve your physique and performance. Training for training is no fun. You must train and also enjoy training. One good reason to perform a sport that you like and to try to get good at it. The rewards are endless. So have fun, life is short, why not
